Mouth-taping strips are adhesive patches applied between the upper and lower lips during sleep to keep the mouth closed; they are typically used to prevent mouth breathing. Although snoring can be associated with mouth breathing, these strips do not treat the underlying causes of snoring.
Snoring stems from various causes, such as obesity, enlarged adenoids, a deviated nasal septum, or nasal polyps. Some people use these strips to seal their mouths and prevent snoring sounds. However, the sensation of a foreign object on the lips during sleep may lead to the user unconsciously peeling them off, rendering them ineffective at stopping snoring; furthermore, they do not address the root cause of the condition. Additionally, improper use can trigger allergic reactions or even pose a risk of suffocation during sleep; therefore, their indiscriminate use is not recommended.
To effectively alleviate snoring, one must identify the specific underlying cause and undergo appropriate treatment. For instance, snoring caused by obesity can be improved through weight loss, while cases involving enlarged adenoids may be treated with procedures such as an adenoidectomy.
